Toki wo Kizamu Uta by Lia. This is the opening to Clannad ~After Story~, the second season of a dating sim game-turned-anime.

Sakura (piano version) by Kajiura Yuki. It's much more powerful if you know the context but I think it's a great melody independent of that context, too.

Good-bye Days by Yui, one of Japan's celebrated singer-songwriter-instrumentalists. This song was the focus of the movie in which Yui starred, Taiyou no Uta ("Song of the Sun"), in which Yui's character tries to balance the romantic compulsions of teenage life with her parents' pleas to never leave the house because of her xeroderma pigmentosum.

Dreams by The Cranberries

Hotel California by The Eagles

anything modern by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra or similar orchestras willing to perform pop culture pieces

Angeleyes by ABBA ;p :)

Asian Kung-Fu Generation's work. They've done the opening or ending theme songs to several popular boys' animes in recent years like Naruto and Fullmetal Alchemist. Matt once told me that he really like that FMA song! It took me a while to warm up to this group -- I think the main singer has a really nasal twang and I'm not a big fan of loud, heavy music -- but the music's heaviness certainly contributes to the "fist-pumping" emotions it stirs inside me when I reflect back on these two shows.

Speaking of songs that took a long time to grow on me, Hero's Come Back is an excellent example of J-rap. Yes, J-rap. I hate rap. And Japanese rap is no exception. But I guess I heard this song enough and it grew on me. Fun trivia I learned from my friend Sean who went to Japan: the growly voice (0:50) is not forced! it's an actual Japanese accent that everyone in that region has! Crazy. Kerraaaaaaaaazy.

Hentai is serious business! At least it is when it comes to opening theme songs. KOTOKO's a very famous singer now, but she's built her career upon many songs which she performed contractually for hentai PC games and animes. Japan's pop stardom route is quite different from America's! lol (Though maybe our own porn would stand to improve if it featured more music like this and less music like you hear in the elevator or at the doctor's office?)

Tsukihime's opening comes to my mind, talking about hentai (which the game originally was) and thinking about the recent cult success of Twilight. Makes me wonder if I could finally get my sister to watch a few series that I know she would really like if only she'd give them a chance.

That's enough out of me. Same old, same old: oldies, television and cinema music, and anime music.
