I don't know that I'd call it "the right way," but yeah, my mind was similarly blown when I learned this last fall from Jeremy (one of my fellow medical students). He was the only one in the class who opened bananas this way, and many of us, self included, hadn't even considered doing it any other way than what we'd been taught as small children.
It is nuts, isn't it? :)
I still open mine "the wrong way," though. ;p It just feels weird after a lifetime of opening bananas from the stem to start opening them from the base.

wow. i'm doing this first thing in the morning for breakfast with my cereal.
We have to open bananas like this at work. I was told I have to open all bananas in the store like this.
