Here's the opening to a song I've started work on. It's actually an old melody. Family members may recognize it as "The Phone Song," a ring tone with lyrics that I made for my mom and dad's cell phones. Despite that goofy version, I've always imagined the song played with a bit more dignity. I've started to arrange it and I'm so pleased with my progress, I thought I'd share my work thus far.
If you like it, be sure to leave a comment. A few kind words go a long way in motivating me to finish. I'll also take suggestions (an instrument too loud? Too much reverb? Not enough? etc.)

It's nice, but doesn't strike me as memorable in and of itself. As far as where it places me goes, I pictured Castle Town from LoZ:OoT immediately, with a heavy focus on Childhood Link peering up at the Temple of Time, sneaking in through a half-cracked open door, and looking in awe at the stained glass windows and the statues and whatnot. Alternatively, split-seconds later many times throughout the song, my mind's eye pictured Hyrulians going about their daily market lives -- a woman carrying a basket filled with bread and covered with a white drape, kids frolicking in the street with a mutt, merchant-looking men conversing energetically en route from unknown position A to unknown position B, etc.
Asked if I like it, I'd give this an 8/10 or so. I do like it.
Asked if I'd think to listen to this song on a whim, I'd give it a 3/10. :\ It just doesn't have anything that pulls me in. It's very pleasant, but not a grabber.
Asked if that's okay, I would say "perfectly okay." Not every song can be a grabber, and in fact not every song should be a grabber in a film or game. If they were, then they'd distract you too often. You'd be focusing on the music moreso than the plot/gameplay at hand. The music can occasionally steal away the player's/viewer's attention but it shouldn't be every 30 seconds.
